Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart
Opera in Two Acts
Performed by: Wiener Festspiele Ensemble
Conductor: Toby Purser
Stage Director: Juliana Berezhnaya
Run Time: Approximately 2 hours
Act 1: The opera begins with Don Giovanni, a notorious womanizer, attempting to seduce Donna Anna. Her father, the Commendatore, challenges Giovanni to a duel and is killed. Donna Anna, grief-stricken, vows revenge with her fiancé, Don Ottavio. Elsewhere, Giovanni encounters Donna Elvira, a woman he previously abandoned, who seeks retribution. His servant, Leporello, reveals Giovanni’s extensive list of conquests in the “Catalogue Aria.” Giovanni then disrupts the wedding of Zerlina and Masetto, attempting to seduce the bride.
Act 2: In the second act, Giovanni continues his escapades by switching clothes with Leporello, leading to more confusion and deception. Donna Elvira is deceived once more, and Giovanni’s reckless behavior persists until he is confronted by the ghost of the Commendatore. In a dramatic finale, the Commendatore’s statue drags Giovanni to hell, punishing him for his sins. The opera concludes with the other characters reflecting on his demise and moving on with their lives.
Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” is a dynamic blend of comedy, drama, and the supernatural, featuring a richly expressive score that vividly brings to life the emotional and moral complexities of its characters.
